ADVANCED FACILITIES INTRODUCED IN THE INDUSTRIAL
HYGIENE LABORATORY & PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT TESTING LABORATORIES OF CENTRAL
LABOUR INSTITUTE, MUMBAI
Central Labour Institute has recently added some advanced testing facilities
to the existing infrastructure of its Industrial Hygiene Division and the
Testing Laboratories for Respiratory and Non-Respiratory Personal Protective
Equipment. These facilities aim to improve upon its present capacities in
asbestos monitoring and control and to ensure quality of Personal Protective
Equipment provided to the industrial workers engaged in various industries.
Some of these facilities are given below:
POLARIZED MICROSCOPE
Polarized
Microscope is used for Identification of different types of asbestos fibres, namely Chrysotile, Crocidolite and Amosite in the
studies carried out to evaluate the asbestos exposures. The Factories Act
prescribes different Permissible Limits of Exposure for each of these forms of
asbestos. All the employers using asbestos are required to ensure that the
concentrations of the fibres in their work places are
within these limits.

TESTING FACILITY FOR SAFETY BELT AND FULL
BODY HARNESS (as per
IS: 3521-1999)
The
Safety Belts with Full Body Harnesses are used by the workers working at
heights for carrying out various jobs in industries and construction projects.
The testing facility enables to carry out two types of tests -- Static Test
& Dynamic test. The Static test is done with the help of Breaking Strength
Testing Machine. The Dynamic Test is done by simulating the actual conditions
with the help of a falling Human Dummy. These facilities are available for
utilization by the manufacturers and users of the safety belts and harnesses.
In order to promote safety of the workmen, the testing charges have been highly
subsidized.
INWARD LEAKAGE TESTING EQUIPMENT FOR DUST
FILTER /FACE MASK BY SODIUM CHLORIDE TEST METHOD (as per IS: 3521-1999)
This
instrument is used for identification and evaluation of inward leakage of air
through the dust respirators and face masks fitted with different classes of
dust filters such as FFP1, FFP2 & FFP3. These facilities are available for
utilization by the manufacturers and users of the dust respirators and face
masks. In order to promote safety of
the workmen, the testing charges have been highly subsidized.
FILTER PENETRATION MACHINE FOR
RESPIRATORY/ DUST FILTER BY SODIUM CHLORIDE METHOD (as per IS: 3521-1999)
This
instrument is used for the testing of filtration efficiency of different types
of dust respirators and face masks against penetration of fine particles
through the filters of classes FFP1, FFP2 & FFP3 fitted therein. These facilities are available for
utilization by the manufacturers and users of the dust respirators and face
masks. In order to promote safety of the workmen, the testing charges have been
highly subsidized.
